LOCAL AUDITIONS

The Tempest

Auditions: May 3rd & 4th, 2025 - Treehouse BDA

Please Note: this call is for Bermudians and Bermuda Residents ages 18 and above only. A separate casting call will be held for U.S. based performers.

Seeking:

1) Actors for both lead and understudy roles. Ability to sing or play musical instruments is a plus, but not required. No international travel will be required for understudies.

2) Assistant Stage Manager. There is no need to sign up for an audition slot for this position. Please email info@devils-isle.org with your interest and any relevant work experience. Experience with live sound equipment is a plus, but not required.

Step 3) What to prepare: Please prepare a short Shakespeare monologue (8-12 lines of verse is fine. A PDF of sample monologues available here.) You may be asked to perform the monologue more than once with an adjustment. If you sing and/or play an instrument, please prepare 16 bars (30-45 seconds) of a song. An accompanist will not be provided, but if you play a portable instrument, please feel free to self-accompany. If you play the piano or a similarly non-portable instrument, please email us a sample video at info@devils-isle.org

Show Information:

The show will rehearse in August and perform in September, 2025. Work will primarily take place in the evenings. Some August rehearsals may be online and/or in the United States. All tech rehearsals and performances will be in Bermuda. Performers in understudy roles will not be required to travel internationally. Housing and travel will be provided for any performers who travel to Washington, DC for early rehearsals. All roles will be paid ($500/week for lead performers).

Come have fun exploring the world of Shakespeare onstage! Our Acting and Stage Combat classes are open to everyone over the age of 14—no experience necessary!

Students ages 14-17 must have a parent or guardian sign and submit this waiver in order to participate. Please come dressed for movement and physical activity. Please submit any questions to info@devils-isle.org

OUR EQUITABLE PRICING POLICY (SIGN-UP BELOW)

We believe that the arts should not be a luxury, and we work to remove all potential financial barriers for participants. The following suggested donations are suggested for each student (per class):

  • Lower-Income Students: $20

  • Standard-Income Students: $60

  • Higher-Income Students: $100

MEET THE INSTRUCTOR - BESS KAYE

Bess holds an MFA in Shakespeare Performance from George Washington University and has decades of experience as a professional actor and teaching artist. She was recently nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for her work on Coriolanus (directed by Devil’s Isle Artistic Director, Séamus Miller). She is also an Associate Instructor and Advanced Actor Combatant with the Society of American Fight Directors, teaching armed and unarmed stage combat techniques at various regional workshops throughout the country. She has choreographed 18 Shakespeare plays and counting including six productions of Macbeth. Her stories of love and violence have appeared at Chesapeake Shakespeare Company, Monumental Theatre Company, Flying V, the Washington Stage Guild, Avant Bard, and DC’s Capitol Fringe Festival. She is the Assistant Combat Instructor and Intimacy Director at the Shakespeare Theater Company’s Academy MFA program and teaches stage combat to young actors in Fairfax and Arlington counties. thebesskayescenario.com
